Duality 2.0 – Instructions

Duality is a tool that allows you to create a custom video which can reveal a freely chosen number, word of even picture. You can make personal video starring your own persona and message. Get your spectator to interact with the video and they will not believe the result. As a proof, you will send them the video through any social media platform, and they will have a memorable piece of mentalism which also includes all of your business information.

In this tutorial we will take you through everything you need to do in order to use Duality 2.0 and create your own videos.

When you first open the app, this is the screen that you are going to see:

*You must read the Terms & Conditions and mark the accept option before you can proceed.

After that, sigh in with the option that you prefer. Once you do the app will continue automatically.

Using a generic video

The easiest and the fastest way to start using Duality is using a video that we already supplied in the app. You have some top magicians' videos already inside the app and here I will explain how to edit them and use them right away, and then give you tips for creating your own video.

For the generic videos, the editing is already complete in advance, and ready to perform, but we still recommend checking everything before you perform it in front of people.

When opening the app, our generic videos (and your own videos) will show in the Gallery, as shown here in the screenshot.

In order to reach the main menu- long press the 3 dots at the top right corner

Choose the desired video you wish to use, and long press its picture.

This menu will show

Go ahead and press "Edit Video", in order to start editing the video.

*In order to perform, you won't need to long press the video and then press perform, you can simply press the video, as if it was a regular video in your gallery, and perform the trick.

First thing we edit is "image in"- which refers to the specific time the number/text/picture/drawing/prediction will appear in the video.

First thing we edit is "image in"- which refers to the specific time the number/text/picture/drawing/prediction will appear in the video.

Get to the desired moment, the last picture before uncovering the prediction (for example, as shown in the screenshot here), and in order to save this specific moment , press "set".

You can use the blue arrows to move one frame forward/back, in order to be as accurate as possible.

For "image out", the moment the prediction will disappear from the video (if you wish to have one), press "more options" and then set a time for the disappearance of the prediction, as we just did with the "image in".

When you finish these, go ahead and press "next" at the bottom right corner.

Now you can edit whatever prediction you will use. You will be asked to edit numbers predictions, then text predictions, then a drawing and lastly you will edit a picture prediction, so you will be prepared to perform with the same video for all kinds of predictions.

Now you will edit the prediction itself- starting with the position, size and boldness level of the numbers.

Go ahead and drag the number to the right spot of revelation, and use the size and weight bars in order to adjust for the right size and boldness of the text.

If you press on "more options", these options will appear.

Try these editing tools in order to have the ideal prediction. You can also drag them to the left and use more tools (there's another option right to the "perspective" one).

*the color of the prediction is being set automatically. If you wish to change it, click the "colors" option and click the cover of the prediction in order to copy its color.

You can do the same now for a text, a drawing, and a picture.

If the bar is standing in your way, you can drag it up and down, and it will look just as in this screenshot.

Next you will prepare your video for a picture prediction (which can only be used with Duality transmitter app, in TX mode.

When you finish, press next.

Now you will have to choose a method to use.

I will explain about the different methods and how to use them.

Grid (dim)- you can see here what is a grid, the grid is like an invisible dial pad all over your screen, which isn’t shown, but this is how you input the number to the video, in the grid/pause methods. For this method you will have to set "dim time", which is the point in the video that your screen dims in order to justify you touching the screen twice.

the video will dim (as happens when you haven’t touched the screen for a while) and you would touch the screen (as you normally do) twice. First touch is the first digit, and the second touch is for the second digit.

Grid (no dim)- same thing but without dimming the screen. Just press the screen twice. Works well if you are projecting the video , and no one pays attention to the phone.

Pause- in this method you will pause the video at some point, the first touch will dictate the first digit (like with the grid mode) and the second one (to continue the video) dictate the second digit.

After pause- a minor change from the previous one: the first touch (which pauses the video) would NOT dictate anything, but after the pause, you will input the number with two touches , the first one will not do anything (except for dictating the first digit) and the second one will dictate the second digit AND continue playing the video.

Gyro- with this method you don’t need to touch the screen at all! in this method you will input the number by moving the phone at the right time. You will set a time to begin, let's say 00:10 (after ten seconds). You will have to move the phone twice, the first movement will indicate the first digit and the second movement will dictate the second digit (let's say in 52, 5 is the first digit and 2 is the second digit). So if you want to insert the number 52, you will have to move your phone 5 seconds after the set time (which was 00:10), when the seconds digit is 5 (with our example it's 00:15). You will do the same for the second digit in the next 10 seconds , meaning between 00:20-00:30. The red dot will also turn green at the set time.

TX mode- using the Duality transmitter app from a different phone, you will be transmitting the prediction which can be a number/text/picture/drawing.

D-vir mode- in this mode you will input the text/number as a password when opening the video. The video would look like it's locked and will ask for a password for opening it. The password you type will be your prediction. Can use either numbers or text

The next 4 modes shown under "select method" are yet to be published

After choosing a method you will choose whether to perform with numbers, or using an index list.

What is an index list?

On the main menu, you can find "index text setting", in which you can input lists of texts to use, such as countries, common names, cards, and so on.

So if you make a list of your stacked deck, let's say, and input the number 28, the video will show the 28th card in your stack.

Now that you know how to edit a generic video, I want to teach you how to take it to the next level and create your own videos!

A few tips for shooting the video:*

The surface on which the number should be revealed has to be stable- if you try to hold a sheet of paper lets say and reveal the number on it, the paper might move a bit and the number won't, which will look pretty bad.

Keep in mind that the color of whatever "covers" the number will have to match the number's color, so a black cover works great, but feel free to be as creative as you can!

Leave a gap to insert to number after it's been said- if you tell them in your video to say the number out loud and you want to reveal it a second after, you will have to rush to pause the video. This gap of time will make it more deceptive too as you separate the action from the result.

When you uncover the number, do it as fast as possible. The number should appear already and you don’t want it to be seen over its cover.

Set your phone down or hold it with a tripod. Holding the phone might have it move a bit, and the number will move on the surface and make it look pretty bad.

*More features to explore:

"edit fonts"- in the main menu you can find "edit fonts", in which you can add and remove different fonts for the predictions.

Download generic video- we keep updating the generic video gallery, so you can use new ones all the time. Check this gallery from time to time to get new videos.

 Main Settings page

This is the screen you will get to after pressing a long press on the menu ion on your gallery page.

From here you can create a new video, go here (to the instructions page), Edit your indexes and fonts, and go back to the Gallery page. You can also go from here directly to our FB users group to get more ideas.

Create a new video

Creating a new video is quite easy, but it is important to know in advance what you are about to film. We recommend starting of with a basic presentation, which we call The thought projector, and you can find a detailed description of it below. Let’s assume that is the routine you are going to film first. Here is what you will need before you start:

  • The Duality app
  • A spiral notebook
  • A stand for the notebook, we recommend a small easel.
  • A marker, preferably a thick one as it shows best on camera.

Let’s start with the most important thing which is what points you should have in minds while making your first video:

Video guidelines:

When making your first video, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. You can technically use any camera to film the video, but we recommend you use your phone’s camera (front facing or back facing), as it usually produces video in FHD, and it also appears the most natural.
  2. Make sure your phone (or camera) is completely stable while revealing the prediction (use a tripod or place it on something still), otherwise the trick won’t look good. You can move around while you talk and present, but when the final revelation is done, the video must remain completely still.
  3. Choose which presentation fits you the most and use it (see the section below).
  4. The easiest way to hide the revelation is to cover it with the notebook’s front cover and place it on the easel (see pic 1).
  5. Give yourself some time between the moment you ask them to name their number outload and the moment you reveal your prediction. If you want to use the Gyro method, you need at least 20 seconds between those moments. Otherwise, we still recommend leaving around 10 seconds or so. That is when you are going to secretly input their number.
  6. When you reveal your prediction, try keeping everything steady, including the table and the surface. (Pic 2)
  7. Make it fun and entertaining! Ask them questions, ask yourself questions, or use running gags that you have in your act. You can also include other effects in the video to make it more visual, such as: Fire wallet, Make the marker appear/disappear etc.
  8. Another important tip is to add an underline where you prediction will appear. This not only look better, but also helps you to place the prediction easily when editing the video.

Notes:

  • You will need more practice if you choose this method over the Grid mode since it is more sensitive and you do not want to code the wrong number by mistake, since once you code the wrong number there is no way back. Make sure you practice it enough, because once you do, it is even cleaner since you never touch your phone!
  • If they choose a number lower than 10, you are going to hold your phone still for the first 10 seconds and move it only on the second round.

 Index settings:

In this page you can create your own indexes of predictions, or use the ones supplied. You can edit each one of them in any language, but you must make sure that there are fonts in the app capable of writing in that language. If you can’t find it, please contact us and we will add the required fonts.

 Share settings

You can reach this page by long pressing on a video in the gallery > share settings. The page looks like this:

Here you can insert any text you would like to share with your video. Make sure the Enable this option first (The small button on the right).

Write down your website, phone number and other commercial information you would like to send your clients. Once you share the video, the text will be automatically copied to your device's clipboard. Then, you only need to paste it in whichever platform you decide to share with.

Sharing the video

We believe that the share option is probably the most significant tool for the working performer. After you are done with the effect, you can ask for your spectator's phone number, and send them the video immediately. They will have a reminder of the amazing thing that had just occurred, and you will have a new potential customer saved in your contacts. After the video is done playing, simply use the Share icon and choose a platform to share with:

in case your number is not calibrate in the exported video, this is what yu need to do :  https://youtu.be/UvBKMKYt8SU

How to preform with Duality?

Depending on your video, your presentation might vary. You can approach your spectator and ask them to look at a video you made for them, and to reply to is questions. If you want, you can also script some lines in which you talk with yourself in the video. Duality works best in a quite environment, where it is easy to hear what the video says. If you want to use it in a noisy residency, you can use written text instead of talking (to write down the question on pieces of paper).

For the index lists, you can either memorized the list (having it in alphabetical order would help you a lot), or write it down on a piece of card. If you have a clear phone case, you can slide the list underneath it and see it yourself while you are performing. If you choose to use it in a virtual show, you can simply have it printed in front of you while you are preforming. If you size down the list to only 20-30 options, memorizing them won’t be difficult (ex. If you use countries, you can only limit them to a certain continent).

Using a stacked deck with duality would also work perfectly. You can simply enter a card to  the app just by entering its position in the stack (if you wish to use a stack that in not mnemonica you must insert it to the index lists).

With the TX mode, you don’t need to memorise anything, since you have a partner who will insert the information for you.

The thought projector - Routine

This is the most straight forward, to-your-face routine we have developed. It is commercial, it will get your spectator involved and most importantly it will give them a reason to go back to the video and watch it over and over again.

The effect:

The performer introduces a video on his phone and asks the spectator to reply to it as if they were in the same room together. The video begins by the recorded performer asking:

Has anyone ever influenced your decisions through the screen?

Most of us are influenced by our phones pretty much 24-7. I would like to try and input a thought into your mind, is that okay with you?

Excellent! Please think of any number you want up to 100, and do not tell anyone what it is.

The recorded performer then takes a notebook and writes something down, covering it with the notebook’s cover and setting it down. He then says:

I have committed myself to a single number. For the first time, can you name the number you thought of out loud?

Look at your audience as they say the number. Using your preferred method, code the correct number to the app while the recorded performer continues:

Now that felt like a free choice, right? There is no way I could control your decision through the screen and through time. Statistically speaking, there is only a chance of 1% that our two numbers will be identical. Unless of course, I managed to influence your decision…

If you are using the Gyro method, it is important that this part will last for at least 20 seconds.

The performer in the video will now open the notebook and reveal the chosen number (of courses you have already edited the video and all of the dirty work is done).  You then say:

Perhaps it was a coincidence, or maybe I did get inside your head. I will send you the video so you can watch it for yourself and maybe you will see when I did what I did.

This is straight forward lying, but it will get your audience attention and they will now have a good reason to revisit the video to try and “Catch you” (Some people might even play it in slow-motion, of course that does not matter).

More presentational ideas

  • It is up to you how do you choose to preform this effect. It can be a demonstration of mind reading, A prediction or a suggestion routine. Make the presentation personal and match it with your persona.
  • You can also include other elements in the video such as different force items (Cards, names, time, date, location, objects etc.) so you will have more than one climax.
  • Another idea is to write on the back of your business card: “I will be off by 2” and then to hand it to them before you show the video. Then you can preform the effect and have an extra kicker by revealing a number that is lower by 2 than the one they have named.
